Abstract: The discovery of a low temperature structural transition in an ionic covalent crystal with a high degree of covalency was discussed. The structural transitions were found to be induced by a three dimensional impurity of an extremely low concentration. Experiments on elastic scattering of thermal neutrons were performed at a multi-detector diffractometer meant for single crystals. It was found that effective monochromatization of the initial beam and the optimum choice of the neutron's wavelength made it possible to suppress a multiple harmonic effect, improving the method sensitivity.
